Kan Kan Booru // කං කං බූරූ
A widely popular traditional Sri Lankan nursery rhyme and children's game chant.
Origin
The chant is often recited by Sinhalese children as "kan kan booru // කං කං බූරූ (leader); sin signoru // සිං සිඥෝරු (followers)". This is likely a local adaptation of the Portuguese phrases "cão, cão, burro (leader); sim, senhor (followers)", meaning "dog, dog, donkey (leader); yes, sir (followers)". These types of games may have entered sinhalese culture through Sunday schools at Portugese-run Catholic churches.
