Booruwa // බූරුවා
Sinhalese word for donkey, as well as the Jack (or Knave) in playing cards and a popular traditional Sri Lankan card game.
Origin
For the animal, likely originated from the Portuguese word burro (donkey). In playing cards, the Jack originated from the Dutch word boer (meaning farmer or Jack in cards, alongside Heer, Vrouw, and Aas), which phonetically merged with the existing Sinhala word. The traditional wagering card game also shares historical roots with the Iberian card game burro.
